Lauren Cassidy, Coronavirus Elegy

I composed "Coronavirus Elegy" using data based on coronavirus death statistics in the

United States. The CDC tracked how many Americans died of covid each week

throughout the pandemic, which I translated into pitch. I then translated the pitch into

color, creating a work which merges music, art, and data.

Each band of color represents 1 week of coronavirus deaths, and the size of the bar

indicates how long the note is sustained. A recording can be found at this link:

Lauren E. Cassidy is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy from Queens University of Charlotte in 2019, and has been a Music Therapist-Board Certified since 2020. Lauren’s works can be found in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. Her artwork and music compositions have been featured in numerous galleries and museums, including the Smithsonian-affiliated Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Woodmere Art Museum. In her present work, she focuses on creating works of art which are playable as music compositions and composing music which is best notated as visual art.
