Art in the Open

Alexandra Orgera is a photographer living and working in Philadelphia. After receiving her B.A. in Science and Humanities from Carnegie Mellon University, she pursued the study of photography through coursework at Universität der Künste, University of the Arts, and Project Basho, and in 2015, she co-founded The Halide Project, an organization dedicated to traditional and alternative process photography.

During Art in the Open, I will make a series of experimental large-scale cyanotype photograms. Using fabric and paper panels pre-coated with light sensitive chemistry, I will explore the intersection of the natural and built environments along the Schuylkill River, documenting shadows of architecture and plant life, natural phenomena such as wind or the movement of the water, and perhaps weather patterns such as rainfall, allowing the rain to simultaneously expose and develop itself on the material. Through the act of manipulating these materials to expose these different elements, I hope to direct the public’s attention to details of the landscape that they may not otherwise notice or appreciate. By examining the resulting, potentially abstract, images and discussing how they were created, I look forward to sharing in the wonder of the unseen visual phenomena of our world.
