Matthew Courtney is a ceramic sculptor who has lived and worked in Philadelphia for most of his life. He received his B.S. from the University of the Arts and his MFA at Kent State University. He teaches at The University of Pennsylvania, The University of the Arts and Drexel University's Westphal College of Media Arts and Design. He has been awarded an Ohio Arts Council Artist Fellowship and a Jerome Foundation Fellowship. In 2000 he had a Challenge Exhibition at Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia PA. In 2015 he was selected by the Dunhuang Creative Center, to spend 2 months of the summer of 2015 in China. He returned to China for two months in 2017. Recent exhibitions include a one person show in 2016, “Transformations”, the 12th annual Betsy Meyer Memorial Exhibition at The Main Line Art Center, Haverford PA and in 2017 Divergences ” Cerulean Gallery, Philadelphia PA. He is currently studying Chinese in hopes of returning to work in China. Matt was a 2017 CFEVA Fellowship Finalist.
